Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba was constructed in 1959 on the Zambezi River to provide hydro-electric power to Zambia and Zimbabwe. Kariba has become one of Zimbabwe's major tourist resorts and has an airport, hotels and camping facilities as well as a marina for a variety of watersports and fishing. It is renowned for the famous tiger fish which resides in its waters.

The lake lies in the Lake Kariba Recreational Park, in which there is a wealth of wildlife and birdlife. Thousands of animals of all types were saved from drowning or starvation during the construction of the Lake in Operation Noah as well as having to relocate the local Tonga people who were living in the area at the time.

In 1957, the dam was at the time, the largest in the world, and its size and strength remains awesome. The Batonga people were convinced that the wrathful river god Nyaminyami would destroy the dam project. In July 1957 a once in 1,000 years storm saw the Zambezi burst through the coffer dam destroying months of work.
