Arriving

Passport holders of some countries among them Nigeria, Israel and Portugal must obtain a visa in advance to enter Zimbabwe. South Africans can now obtain a visa at the point of entry in Zimbabwe. Visitors may import duty-free any personal effects not for disposal in Zimbabwe. Consumable goods, not being merchandise imported for trade purposes may be imported duty free up to a value of $1000 per person. Alcohol beverages may be included in this allowance up to a maximum of 5 litres of which not more than 2 litres may be spirits.

Getting to Zimbabwe

Harare is served by a dozen airlines linking it directly with London and several European capitals plus Nairobi, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Australia. All the major visitor centres are connected by air by Air Zimbabwe except for Mutare and Masvingo. Air charter companies for internal flights include United Air, Executive Air, Bush Pilots and Air Tabex.

By Road

A superb road network connects Zimbabwe with all its neighbours. Internally all the major visitor centres are connected by good metal roads. On entering the country you will need to produce a police clearance certificate, your vehicle registration and vehicle insurance. In Zimbabwe one drives on the left and gives way to the right.

By Rail

Zimbabwe is linkied by rail with its neighbours South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique. Rail links all the main tourist centres. Harare's main station is in Kenneth Kaunda Avenue.

Car Hire

Car hire firms include: Europcar, Avis, Hertz and Fleet. To hire a bicycle contact Bush Trackers or by taxi, ranks are available oustide the large hotels. Coach services link all the main Zimbabwe centres.

Climate

Winter is from June to September. December to February is the rainy season with an average of 15 days of rain each month. Harare is sunny nearly all year round with the sun rising and setting at around 6am and 6pm.

Hours of Business

Banks: Weekdays 8:00-15:00 (Wednesdays closing at 13:00.) Saturdays 8:00 - 11:00

Post offices: Weekdays 8:30 - 16:00. Sundays 8:30 - 11:00

Department Stores: Weekdays 8:30 - 17:00. Saturdays 8:30 - 13:00. Supermarkets and flea markets often stay open on Sunday mornings.

Money

Currency Exchange - Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airport, hotels, banks and bureaux de change. No restriction on the amount of travellers cheques or foreign cash visitors can bring in or take out of the country. Banks charge 2% on travellers cheques. International credit cards are acceptable.

Tips - Tips of around 10% are appreciated everywhere.
